Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person perceives the world, processes information and interacts with others. Because it is a spectrum condition, it presents differently in every individual. Two people with the same diagnosis can have entirely distinct strengths, characteristics and support needs. ASD is primarily defined by differences in two main areas: 1. Social Communication and InteractionCommunication Styles: Autistic individuals may communicate differently - ranging from highly spoken and articulate language to non-speaking communication (using signs, gestures or assistive technology). They might take language literally, prefer direct communication or process spoken words at a different speed. Social Connection: Interacting with others may follow different patterns. Autistic people often prefer clear, direct conversations and may find neurotypical social norms (e.g. non-verbal cues, small talk or unwritten social rules) unintuitive or exhausting. 2. Repetitive Behaviours, Focused Interests and Sensory Processing Focused Interests: Many autistic individuals develop deep, highly specialised passions for specific topics, hobbies or fields of study, often acquiring an exceptional depth of knowledge. Routines and Predictability: Sticking to predictable routines or familiar schedules often provides a sense of comfort, order and safety in an overwhelming environment. Repetitive Movements (Stimming): Behaviours like hand-flapping, rocking, pacing, or repeating certain sounds (self-stimulatory behaviours) can help regulate emotions, manage anxiety or process sensory input.Sensory Sensitivity: Autistic people often experience sensory inputs differently. They may be hypersensitive (over-reactive) or hyposensitive (under-reactive) to sights, sounds, textures, smells, tastes or temperatures. For instance, fluorescent lights might feel painfully bright or ambient background noise might feel intensely overwhelming.
